Recycling Program

Allcity Bins has developed a Responsible Waste Management Program that will focus on diverting and recycling construction and demolition (C&D) waste to help meet the Alberta Recycling/LEED (http://www.cagbc.org/) guidelines.

Our goal for recycling and assisting our customers with “Green Programs” will be to maximize the diversion and minimize the environmental impact of C&D waste items. Allcity is currently working with our builders to design a Responsible Waste Management Plan tailored to their specific needs, and can be incorporated into the daily operations.

We are currently recycling the following items:

  • Clean Wood
  • Drywall

Recycling Bin

Together with our builders input we have designed and created a recycling bin that is left at the construction site for single source waste collection.  The recycling bin has been designed with a locking lid to prevent garbage from entering the bin and contaminating the desired recycled product.

City Plans:

In January 2004, The City of Calgary proposed a goal of recycling 80 percent of its total waste stream by the year 2020. To achieve this goal many waste streams need to be addressed, including C&D waste. C&D represents approximately 20 percent of the total waste placed in city landfills and is comprised of these approximate values:

  • 40% wood/wood products
  • 20% drywall
  • 10% concrete/aggregate
  • 30% metals, cardboard, plastic, and other materials

The City of Calgary has implemented the following short-term measures for diverting landfill waste;

  • Raise municipal solid waste tipping fees to $85/tonne in 2010
  • Reclassify the following items as “Designated Materials” and increase the tipping fee for these materials to $120/tonne (2010 rate). The materials include;
    • Concrete
    • Brick
    • Masonry concrete block
    • Asphalt
    • Metal
